What a Proper Gutter Cleanout Includes
A gutter cleanout is more than scooping leaves out of the trough. If the downspouts stay blocked, the water still spills over the edge at the next rain.
Before you compare prices, make sure each company is quoting the same work. A full cleaning should cover these four things:
- Debris cleared. Leaves, twigs and packed buildup come out by hand and with tools.
- Downspouts flushed. Water runs through each one to prove it drains.
- Gutters checked. Joints, slopes and hangers are looked at for problems.
- Site left clean. No piles of wet leaves on the lawn or the driveway.
If a quote just says “clean gutters”, ask what that means before you agree to it.

Do you flush the downspouts?
A clogged downspout makes a clean gutter overflow anyway. Ask if each one is tested with water.
Are you insured?
Ask for the amount of liability insurance and proof of WSIB coverage before anyone climbs a ladder.
Who works at height?
Ask if the people on ladders and roofs hold Working at Heights training.
What about gutter guards?
Guards still need cleaning. Ask if the crew takes them off and cleans underneath.
Is the price fixed?
Ask for the full price before the work starts, and if anything can be added on the day.
How do you leave the property?
Ask who picks up the debris, and whether they walk you through the finished job.
Blocked Gutters and Downspouts: Signs to Watch For
Overflowing water is the clearest sign. Other signs are debris you can see from the ground, sagging gutters, stains on the siding and weeds in the trough.
Don’t leave a blocked gutter until the next season. Water backs up and can damage the roof, the fascia, the foundation and even the inside of the house. Standing water also brings mould, rot and pests.
A downspout that stays dry in heavy rain is blocked somewhere. So is one that gurgles and spills at the top seam.
